Nehrer Gyorgy says: Hungary George= György The settlement’s Hungarian name is “Nagyőr Község”, its German name is “Nehrer”, and its Slovakian name is “Strážky”. The part of the settlement known as “Szepesbéla” is located in Slovakia, while the “Eperjesi” district is in Késmárk County. In the Árpád Age the settlement was a fortress and was populated by border patrol guards. In 1261, Germanic Templar Knights built a monastery in Nehrer. The Berzeviczy family was the village’s first known Hungarian land owner, and they received their estate from King Charles Robert at the beginning of the 14th century. In the 15th century the Silesian Warkotsch family built a gothic castle on the ruins of the monastery. In 1556, the Horváth-Stancsics family became the new occupants of the castle. Today, a glorious renaissance castle, built between 1570 and 1580, stands on the site of the old castle. It was commissioned by Gergely Horváth-Stancsics, a noted humanist of the period, who founded a college in it, which operated until 1711. Later, the Thököly’s transformed the castle. In 1708, it was ravaged by fire, after which it was expanded as a four wing castle. In 1801, the settlement became part of the Szirmay estate, and in the second half of the century it became the property of the Mednyánszky and later the Czóbel families.
